Considerations To Make When Selling Items Online

You don’t need to look very far to make money. Selling items online will not only make you a bit of money, but it will help you declutter your house of things you no longer need. I love having a clear out every so often and anything that can make me a bit of money ends up on either eBay or Depop.

Earlier this month I did a mass clear out and put a whole bunch of items on eBay and made about £240 after fees and postage which I was really happy about.

When selling items online price your packaging correctly

Each selling platform will have different ways of calculating postage. Some will do this automatically for you when you select the size the package will be. And others (like eBay) allow you to choose this yourself.

Plan out your packaging and your postage costs ahead of time to ensure you don’t lose out on money by the buyer paying incorrect postage. I’ve had some times where I’ve put something down as a large letter, but it was a small parcel and I had to spend another £2 on postage.

Look out for cheaper selling days/ weekends

eBay usually charges a 10% fee on every item that you sell, and the same goes for sites like Depop. If you’re selling a high value item then you may lose out on a lot of money. And if you’re selling a cheaper item it will reduce how much you make even further. Depop recently did a weekend where there were no sales fees, and eBay regularly have £1 max fee weekends, or other deals.

if you have a lot of items to sell it’s worth keeping your eye open for these weekends as you can save a lot.

Take good photos of your items

The first thing someone will see when they scroll past your item is the photo. Much like online dating your item for sale will be judged by how it looks. So take your photos in good lighting from a variety of angles including up close. Most platforms will allow you to upload multiple images, and good photos will maximise it’s selling potential.

Think about what you’d want to see if you were buying the product. Show off any boxes or packaging it comes with. Any tags the item might have. And showcase any damage clearly.

When selling items online write good descriptons

The more information you include when selling items online the more chance you have of selling it. Adding in specifications like material and style on clothing mean when people filter search results you’ll come up at the right time. But again think about what you’d want to like about the product. Has it been used? If so what condition is it in? Give as much information as you can. Plus this way people wll be less likely to ask questions.
